Brief Scores: Barbados Tridents 196/4 in 20 overs (Kieron Pollard 83*, Kane Williamson 46; Kyle Mayers 2-30) beat St Lucia Stars 129/6 in 15.2 overs (Darren Sammy 60*; Wayne Parnell 3-28, Wahab Riaz 2-27) by 21 runs on DLS method.
Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Stars on Thursday (August 10) at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Game 8 of the Caribbean Premier League 2017. It was always going to be difficult for the Stars once they were asked to chase down 197, and with wickets tumbling at regular intervals, Tridents made the match their own, with rain ensuring that they didn’t even have to stay on the field for the entire quota. Big-hitting was on full display with Kieron Pollard and Darren Sammy cracking up blazing knocks but wickets in clusters and untimely rain found Sammy’s side short on the DLS sheet, and Tridents picked up their second win, by 21 runs.
Earlier in the day, Tridents’ openers Kane Williamson and Dwayne Smith posted a solid opening partnership of 72 runs in just over nine overs. While Williamson was watchful to begin with and focused on putting the bad balls away, Smith went after Kyle Mayers immediately, hitting him for a six and a four in his opening over. The big-hitting West Indian didn’t take his foot off the pedal as he next targetted fellow countryman Sammy, striking him for two fours and a six in the eighth over.
However, Mayers had the last laugh as in his comeback over. He removed Smith first and then new man Shoaib Malik off back-to-back balls, producing thick edges to short third man where Jesse Ryder didn’t make a mistake. Williamson continued longer but failed to up the ante, falling for a 44-ball 46 with a mistimed slog ending down the throat of the deep mid-wicket fielder.
