Women cricketers getting equal pay as men great for Australia- Jones

Dean Jones shares a special bond with Tamil Nadu. The 56-year-old, who announced his arrival on the world stage with a fighting double century in the 1986 India-Australia tied Test in Chepauk, played 52 Tests and 164 ODIs for his country. Currently part of the commentary team in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

What are your thoughts on the CA-ACA pay dispute which got resolved a few days ago?

I feel the pay dispute could have been handled a lot better by Cricket Australia. In hindsight, James Sutherland should have taken over right from the start. He has only been involved in the last month of the 10-month negotiations. Anyway we got the deal done and got ready to go. It’s unfortunate that it cost us the tour of Australia A to South Africa. The best part of the whole press release sent by CA was that the women cricketers are getting equal pay as the men. That’s what it should have been all about, but unfortunately the whole thing was about the [CA-ACA] fight.

What are your views on the windfall for Australian women cricketers?

I think it’s just great that our women cricketers are getting paid equally as the men. Hopefully, it would happen to Indian women cricketers as well. After what the Indian women have done at the recent World Cup, young girls [in India] are inspired to play cricket for their country.
