Yuvraj’s innings was the difference – Virat Kohli

IND 319/3 (48.0 Ovs)
PAK 164-all out (33.4 Ovs)

“The combination was something that we spoke about. We had named 12 yesterday, and then we decided in the morning that the surface was hard enough for the bowlers to keep hitting good, hard length and use the bouncer every over as well to create a bit of pressure,” Kohli said.

“And we decided to play an extra seamer against Pakistan, purely because of the fact that he becomes a wicket-taking option. Throughout the innings, if you hit your areas well, in a place like England, fast bowlers always come into play with wickets.”

The plan to fell Pakistan worked well enough and Kohli hinted that they exploited an uncertainty in the Pakistan line-up, something which Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur too, felt was wrong with his team.

“Honestly, we wanted to bowl first as well, in the morning. But seeing how quickly they opted to bowl, we felt like they’re not necessarily wanting to chase a total down,” Kohli said.

“I think until 40 I was easing into the game, taking my ones and twos like I always do. I could not go for the big ones because it was tricky. We went off about four times. And we came back in, and so as a player who likes to play the long innings, till the end and usually plays like that for the team, it becomes very difficult to find momentum every time you come back. And all you’ve gotta do is play yourself in again,” said Kohli and added, “Yuvi came in and just took all the pressure off me.”

Sarfraz Ahmed: I think we were not up to the mark with the fielding. Everything was under control till the 40th over. We lost the plot in the last 8 overs. No regrets. We leaked over 100 runs in the last 8 overs and lost the momentum to India. We need to sit together and decide how to control the bowling rate in the death. This tournament has given good pitches. We need to sit together and decide how we can get to more than 300.

Virat Kohli(2/2): The intent from Shikhar was outstanding. Rohit took his time. He needed runs under his belt. From the next game he will be expressive and we all know what kind of a batsman he is. I felt like a club batter in front of Yuvi. He took all the pressure off me, when I was not hitting it well. Yuvraj is in the team because he is a game changer. Hardik as well finishing it off was really outstanding. The batting I would say was 10 out of 10. The bowling and fielding, I would cut one mark. Purely because of the fact that we were playing Pakistan. They play spin really well. Most of their line is made up of right-handers. In pressure situations to be able to hit over mid-off and mid-on is tough. That allowed us to pick wickets and be aggressive throughout the innings. Guys who don’t play spin well, we will play with 2 spinners. It is about who you are playing against.
