Hilton Cartwright plundered an unbeaten 170 at nearly a run a ball to give Western Australia a fighting chance of jumping from fifth place on the Sheffield Shield table into the final against Victoria.

The day started with New South Wales at 5 for 242 in their first innings, but they lost their final five wickets for 67 runs and were dismissed for 309, with Jason Behrendorff collecting 4 for 70.
