ZIM 310/8 (50.0 Ovs)
SL 312/2 (47.2 Ovs)
The team was whitewashed in South Africa 5-0 and then squared a home series against Bangladesh 1-1. Much of their struggles were attributed to the absence of senior players like Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga, who were injured. But even after their return, the struggles continued as they were knocked out of Champions Trophy without reaching the semi-finals. But the worst was when they suffered a first ever home defeat to 11th ranked Zimbabwe in the opening game of the five-match series in Galle.
This year Sri Lanka have played 14 ODIs and won only four. Fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who has struggled all series needs four more wickets to become the fourth Sri Lankan to complete 300 ODI wickets.
“It’s been a tough year for us no doubt. So it’s very important to win this series. I don’t want any complacency creeping in and will be reminding everyone that we need to finish off the series,” – Angelo Mathews.
“Disappointed that we scored 310 and couldn’t defend in the last game. On the bowling side we need to bowl better. I thought we bowled both sides of the wicket,” – Graeme Cremer.
