Scores: Sri Lanka 136 in 49.4 overs (Yasoda Mendis 34; Hayley Matthews 3-18) lost to Windies 138/4 in 39 overs (Merissa Aguilleira 32*) by six wickets.
Windies Women got their ICC Women’s Championship campaign off to a solid start, beating Sri Lanka by six wickets in the first match at the Brian Lara Stadium on Wednesday (October 11). Set 137 to win, the hosts polished off the chase in 39 overs.
After opting to bat, Sri Lanka were well placed at 63 for 1 in the 23rd over but collapsed from there to fold for a paltry score. Chamari Atapattu fell for a 44-ball 25 and that led to the wobble. The visitors soon found themselves tottering at 96 for 5 and failed to recover to challenge the hosts.
Hayley Matthews gave away just 18 runs from her ten overs and collaborated with Afy Fletcher (3 for 42) and Stafanie Taylor (3 for 24) to dismantle Sri Lanka. Yasoda Mendis fought for 72 deliveries for her 34 but with little support coming from the other end, she waged a lone battle.
