PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Smith, winning captain: Nice to get over the line in the end. Pretty ordinary batting display really, apart from Head. Rest of us need to have a hard look at ourselves. It all happened pretty quickly. 8/5, you take that any day of the week. It’s an area we are trying to work on. Our starts haven’t been quite good. Pat and Josh hit the right areas. Against anyone, you just want to bowl good balls and try and force them to play big shots off good balls. Today they did it beautifully. It’s exciting, the first event at the new stadium (in Perth). Feels like it’s been a long time coming. It looks incredible.
Pat Cummins – Tough few games to start the series, was nice to start off well here. Pretty good wicket. The wicket has been brilliant here the last couple of years. Feels like we’ve got some pace and bounce. Swung around a bit early. Great wicket. He’s (Hazlewood) just about the best bowler in the world in ODIs. You see why. Lands it on a dime. Bit of movement. You know what you’re going to get. It’s everything I could have asked for. At the start of the summer, I wanted to be up for the Gabba Test. Didn’t think about too much else after that. Feels like the ball is coming out well. Been a great summer. Gonna be a great tour over there. Test matches going on over there look to be very exciting. They play similar brand of cricket to us (South Africa).
Morgan, losing captain: Was the difference in the game today (going down to 8/5). We fought well to get Australia seven down with just 190 on the board was an outstanding effort. To get five down like that really emphasized how much there was in the wicket. Full credit to Australia, how well they bowled. Hardly gave anything to hit. In that particular moment, you have one of two ways. One is to hang in and try and get through. The other is throw the onus on the bowler. We tried both but it didn’t work. Adil Rashid got us right back in the game. We needed something special to make that happen but it didn’t come. We are looking forward to Perth. End of an era with the old stadium, really excited to get in front of 60000 people.
